Investment portfolio
Synergis Technologies shares a track record of success with our parent company Porton Capital in supporting new and cutting edge technologies, some of which include:
Acal EnergyAcal Energy has developed a novel type of fuel cell
system that has the ability to lower the cost of
Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cells by up to 40%
by use of a liquid catholyte system to replace the
expensive platinum cathode. It has the potential
for broad application, for example, in both stationary
and automotive power generation. |

Cellcrypt LimitedCellcrypt is a privately held company based in London, UK. It also
has an office in Foster City, California. Established in 2005, it’s
flagship product, Cellcrypt Communicator™ is a unique solution
in providing security and privacy against communications eavesdropping
and tampering in the mobile network. The need for greater privacy whilst
using mobile phones has increased dramatically over recent years and
this complete solution is aimed at anyone demanding complete privacy
in their mobile communications. |

Enigma Diagnostics LimitedA spin-out from DSTL, Enigma Diagnostics is a world leader in the
development of rapid diagnostics for a wide range of infectious diseases.
The Company uses PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technology to provide
point-of-care testing in both clinical and environmental settings
providing results from a raw sample in less than 60 minutes. PCR
technology is widely accepted as the gold standard for the detection
of biological agents in a wide range of samples including blood,
water and food. |

HydroVenturi LimitedHydroVenturi is designing and testing new systems for generating sustainable, environmentally friendly, renewable energy. Using no moving parts under water, HydroVenturi's system can generate energy from river and tidal water flow in as little as 2 metres of water. Originating from Imperial College, London, the HydroVenturi system is in trials now and preparing for commercial installations. |

Intelligent Fingerprinting LtdIntelligent Fingerprinting is a spin-out company from the
University of East Anglia that has developed a unique technology
for simultaneous detection of personal identity and contact
with illicit substances. The Company’s technology can
determine whether an individual is using drugs from the sweat
deposited in a fingerprint while the fingerprint itself gives
a positive identification of the suspect. The technology detects
the metabolite and not the drug itself which is particularly
useful as this makes it impossible for an individual to cheat.
The initial application for the technology will be in forensics
and law enforcement although the technology can also be used
in roadside policing and homeland security. |

MicroviskMicrovisk has developed a novel micro-scale method of accurately
measuring the viscosity of fluids. The first application
will be in healthcare - a hand-held unit for point of care
rapid measurement of pro-thrombin times and other blood coagulation
teats. This is of particularly importance for patients on
anti-coagulant drugs, a commonplace occurrence, where regular
monitoring is essential to control the drug regime. |
P2i LimitedWorking closely with Durham University and Dstl, P2i has produced
a revolutionary nanoscale surface coating through a pulsed cold plasma
process, making any material liquid resistant while remaining both
flexible and breathable. |

PetrraPETRRA Ltd has developed a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) system using state-of-the-art IP from a number of Centres of Excellence in South East England, under exclusive licence to PETRRA. Not only can the PETRRA system scan more of a patient’s body than conventional PET systems but is also designed to be more affordable for healthcare providers. PETRRA will provide both 2-D and fully 3-D images of the internal biochemistry of the body providing oncologists and cardiologists with diagnostic information about disease-related abnormalities e.g. cancerous growths, myocardial disease etc. |
Smart Holograms Limited A Cambridge University spin-out, Smart Holograms is designing and
manufacturing sophisticated sensor holograms, able to react to a number
of stimuli and adaptable to many industries including medical and packaging. |
|
SmartKem LimitedSmartKem, a Company based in North Wales is developing high value electronic materials that can be solution ‘printed’ on to large area flexible substrates. The technology offers an alternative to the dominant silicon electronics which are rigid, brittle and processed at high temperatures by developing organic semiconductors that can replace the silicon backplane that drives flat panel displays. These organic semiconductor molecules can then be formulated into ‘inks’ which will offer superior performance and a less complex manufacturing route than current market alternatives. |

Warwick Audio TechnologiesWarwick Audio Technologies has developed technology to produce thin
film loudspeakers which are as flexible as paper, can be shaped and
can be used to direct sound. These speakers are effective in a diverse
range of applications, from consumer entertainment markets through
to industrial and automotive usage, allowing speakers to be designed
into products easily and cheaply. A further advantage
is that they consume much less power than conventional speakers – the
first ‘green’ loudspeakers. |

Warwick WarpA spin-out from the Department of Computer Science
at Warwick University, Warwick Warp is a leading
biometrics company that has developed a new type
of algorithm for a faster, more accurate and highly
scalable method for fingerprint recognition and matching.
This new method overcomes the shortcomings of current
fingerprint recognition technologies which often
fail to match prints of poor quality. Warwick Warp’s
technology, therefore, can be used in a wide variety
of applications ranging from civil access control
and user authentication to criminal identification. |

Psynova Neurotech LimitedPsynova was the first investment that Synergis recommended to Porton
for investment. Originating from the University of Cambridge's Institute
of Biotechnology, and associated with the Cambridge Centre for Neuropsychiatric
Research (CCNR), Psynova is developing a series of biomarkers to both
diagnose and better treat neuropsychiatric conditions such as Schizophrenia,
Bipolar disorder, and other significant mental illnesses. The company
is working on a novel, precise, blood based clinical test for these
illnesses to replace conventional interview and therapy diagnosis.
Porton sold its investment in September 2009. |
