Warwick Audio Technologies wins Cisco Award for Most Innovative Product
17 November 2009
Warwick Audio Technologies, a UK-based developer of thin-film loudspeaker technology was awarded the Cisco prize for Most Innovative Product at the Lord Stafford Awards ceremony on 12th November 2009. The prize is worth £5,000. The awards ceremony was held at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon, Oxfordshire for all the 12 shortlisted candidates.
Warwick Audio impressed the judges with their innovative thin-film loudspeaker technology which is also lightweight, flexible and inexpensive to manufacture. Not only do the speakers have the potential to replace conventional loudspeaker technology but the flat and lightweight nature of the speakers opens up a host of new applications for them such as headlining speakers for in-car entertainment and directional speakers for PA systems.
Warwick Audio’s technology demonstrates several key features over conventional loudspeaker systems. As they are so thin and lightweight, the actual physical space needed by them is minimal which is particularly advantageous for applications where space is at a premium. Also, as the speakers are flexible, they can easily be contoured to fit around various shapes and can be used for both indoor and outdoor applications.
Steve Couchman, CEO of Warwick Audio Technologies commented “We are delighted to receive this prestigious award. The recognition it provides us will be extremely valuable as our groundbreaking technology enters the next commercial phase. Over three billion loudspeakers are sold every year and our technology has the potential to be used in a lot of these applications.”
“Our technology has the potential to revolutionise the loudspeaker industry”, stated Dr Duncan Billson, Chairman of Warwick Audio Technologies. “Not only can our technology be used to replace many conventional loudspeaker technologies but the flexible, lightweight nature of our products can open up a whole range of innovative new applications previously restricted by the incumbent technology”.
Terry Swainbank, Investment Director for Synergis Technologies, part of the Porton Capital group added “We made the investment into Warwick Audio Technologies because we recognised the potential of its technology to be able to change the face of loudspeaker systems as we know them. The Cisco award serves to strengthen our belief in the commercial viability of this technology and we are delighted that the Company’s progress has been recognised at such an important high-profile event.”
Warwick Audio’s prize included £5,000 of cutting edge telecommunications equipment which included a 48-port managed Ethernet switch, a VPN router and wireless N-access points. Judging of the regional finalists was carried out by a panel of independent experts who were not only looking for an idea that would break new ground from a technology point of view but that also showed strong market insight and financial planning.
