Press Release

Warwick Warp invited to join Biometrics Experts Panel

21st October 2008

Dr. Li Wang, CTO of Warwick Warp Ltd, a spin-out company from the University of Warwick, has been invited to join the BSI Biometrics (IST/44) Committee as a UK expert in Fingerprint recognition.

The BSI Biometrics Committeee was set up to develop biometrics standards internationally. The BSI IST/44 Committee will mirror the international work of the ISO Biometrics Sub-Committee by representing UK interests in such work.

The IST/44 Committee had its first meeting in September 2002. The creation of the BSI Committee IST/44 allows potential users of the technology to deploy Biometrics with confidence that the technology has reached maturity and can achieve global interoperability with similar systems from other vendors world-wide.

Warwick Warp has developed a novel fingerprint recognition technology that significantly improves the level of accuracy of identifying individuals over current competitor systems. Warwick Warp has developed a range of novel algorithms that improve both the matching accuracy and speed of the fingerprint recognition process. The design of the company’s software algorithms is based on the shortcomings of current systems such as their inability to deal with poor quality fingerprints.

Warwick Warp’s algorithms overcome these shortcomings by allowing for both linear and non-linear deformation in the measurement as well as allowing for variations in background contrast. Furthermore, the technology can robustly detect and incorprate what are known as third level features into the measurement such as sweat pores which have the potential to further increase accuracy in the match.

Fingerprint recognition is at the forefront of biometrics technologies. Biometrics involves automatic recognition of people based on their specific anatomical features and is becoming increasingly used in identification applications as they cannot be shared and contain very specific information relating to a person’s identity.

Li Wang, CTO of Warwick Warp stated “Warwick Warp has developed innovative biometric technologies over the last five years, having spun-out of Warwick University which is world-renowned for its strengths in image processing and enhancement. We are happy to put the expertise we have developed for the common good in standards setting. ”

Terry Swainbank, Investment Director for Synergis Technologies, part of the Porton Capital Group added “Having funded the commercialisation of Warwick Warp’s fingerprint recognition technology, we at Synergis and Porton Capital fully recognise the valuable expertise that the company has to offer in this area.  We are excited at the contribution that they can make to the development of protocols and standards for the adoption of high quality biometric technologies.”
